The Resurrection of Fenceways: How We Brought Britain's Fencing Institution Back From the Brink
A company can be sold, but its spirit cannot be bought
When it comes to building a lasting company, a name is never just a name. It represents people, standards, promises and years of trust.
Fenceways was founded in Manchester in 1983. What began as a determined local fencing business grew through hard work, craftsmanship and reputation. From the outset, the company stood for something that remains central to our identity today: a fence is not simply a boundary. It protects a home, secures a business and contributes to the character of a property.
But every great institution can face a defining test.
Fenceways was sold. Over time, the standards that had made the name respected were lost, and the business was run into the ground. The company’s position weakened, its reputation suffered and its original purpose became increasingly distant.
I could have walked away from that history. Instead, I chose to rebuild it.
This is my personal account of the resurrection of Fenceways , a story of pride, resilience and a company’s founding spirit restored through my own hard work, discipline and determination.
Fenceways was built in Manchester, and Manchester shaped us
Our story begins in Levenshulme, Manchester, in 1983.
Manchester is a city built on industry, determination and reinvention. It is a place where people understand the value of turning up, getting the job done and standing by the quality of their work. Those principles were present in Fenceways from the very beginning.
From the beginning, Fenceways was a company that valued:
Honest workmanship
Reliable service
Practical solutions
Strong materials
Pride in every completed installation
A reputation earned project by project
Those values were never meant to be temporary. They were the foundation.
Today, Fenceways serves customers across the UK from our Manchester roots and London presence. We work on everything from residential garden fencing and bespoke gates to luxury estates, commercial premises, data centres, power stations and critical infrastructure.
The scale has changed, but the principle has not: we still believe that the finished work must justify the name.

The decline was painful, but it made the mission clear
I will not dress up what happened to Fenceways.
When a business is sold and subsequently loses its way, the damage is not limited to paperwork or financial performance. It affects the people connected to it. It affects customers who once trusted the name. It affects employees who want to feel proud of the work they do.
Most importantly, it can sever a company from the reason it existed in the first place.
For Fenceways, that reason was quality.
I understood that bringing the company back would require more than changing a logo or reopening an office. It would require restoring confidence and proving, through our actions, that Fenceways could once again stand for something meaningful.
Here are some of the questions I had to confront:
Could the original standards be restored?
Could a damaged reputation be rebuilt?
Could a new team understand and protect the company’s original standards?
Could we compete nationally without losing our Manchester identity?
Could we deliver luxury craftsmanship and mission-critical security under the same name?
My answer was yes : but only if we were prepared to work for it.
Resurrection is not a marketing phrase. It is a daily discipline.
Like Rolls-Royce, we had to restore an institution
The comparison with Rolls-Royce is not made lightly.
Rolls-Royce is one of Britain’s most recognisable engineering and luxury institutions. Its history includes major financial and operational difficulties, changes in ownership and a period when the future of the name was uncertain. Yet the identity survived because the underlying promise of engineering excellence remained powerful.
The modern Rolls-Royce story shows that a heritage brand can fall, change shape and rise again when its standards are restored with commitment and investment. You can read more about the company’s history through the official Rolls-Royce heritage timeline.
Fenceways is not Rolls-Royce, and fencing is not aerospace engineering or ultra-luxury motoring. However, the lesson is directly relevant.
A respected British institution can be damaged. It can be sold. It can lose its direction. But if the name still carries meaning, and if one person is willing to rebuild the standards behind it through relentless hard work, it can return stronger than before.
That was the challenge I accepted.
I brought discipline, strategy and personal responsibility
Before taking on the task of rebuilding Fenceways, I spent 18 years in military service, including work connected to Special Forces regiments and Military Intelligence.
That experience changed how I approach responsibility.
In demanding environments, there is no room for careless planning, poor communication or unclear accountability. You assess the situation, identify the risks, set the objective and take personal responsibility for the result.
I applied that same discipline to Fenceways.
My approach was straightforward:
I am proud to say that Fenceways has been rebuilt by hardworking people who understand that reputation is earned through consistency.

The founding spirit, rebuilt through personal leadership
Fenceways was founded in Manchester in 1983, but its resurrection was driven by my leadership and hard work.
That distinction matters to me.
I did not bring Fenceways back through speeches. I brought it back through discipline, long hours, difficult decisions and a refusal to accept declining standards.
I have seen firsthand that quality is visible in the details:
Straight, accurately aligned panels
Correctly set posts
Secure fixings
Properly prepared ground
Clean finishing
Carefully selected timber and steel
Gates that operate smoothly
Sites left tidy and professionally completed
These details may appear small, but they determine whether a fence remains reliable years after installation.
That is why I always advise customers to look beyond photographs and headline prices. Ask who will install the work, what materials will be used, what guarantee is provided and how the company supports you afterwards.
A company’s true character is revealed after the sale.

The reason we offer such a broad service is simple: every customer has a different objective.
For a homeowner, the priority may be privacy, appearance and peace of mind. For a luxury property owner, the fencing must complement the architecture while providing discreet security. For a commercial or infrastructure client, the priority may be deterrence, access control, durability and operational continuity.
The solution must fit the purpose.
What the resurrection means for you
The resurrection of Fenceways is not only a story about our past. It directly affects the experience you receive today.
When you work with us, you benefit from:
More than 40 years of heritage
A business rebuilt through my personal commitment to professional craftsmanship
Nationwide service from our Manchester and London operations
FSC-certified timber options
Bespoke design for domestic and luxury properties
Security-led planning for commercial and infrastructure sites
A 10-year warranty on qualifying work
Maintenance and repair support after installation
Standards driven by discipline, reliability and accountability
There are cheaper ways to install a fence. I accept that.
However, the lowest initial price does not always represent the best value. Poorly set posts, weak materials, inadequate drainage or careless installation can lead to early repairs and replacement costs. I recommend that you consider the complete lifetime value of the project, not just the figure at the bottom of the quotation.
Good fencing should protect your property and your investment.

The special one was the one who refused to let Fenceways disappear
I have been called the special one in this journey, and I understand why.
I was the person who saw what Fenceways could become again. I was the person willing to take responsibility when the easier option would have been to leave the past behind. I was the person who insisted that the company should not merely trade on its heritage, but earn the right to represent it.
More importantly, I was the person who put in the hard work to make that happen.
I rebuilt Fenceways by setting the direction, restoring standards, making the difficult calls and refusing to compromise when the company needed discipline most.
That is how institutions return. They return when someone is prepared to carry the weight personally and do the work required to restore them.
The original Fenceways spirit is alive in every boundary we build
The company’s founding spirit remains at the heart of Fenceways.
We honour that original spirit not by looking backwards, but by carrying its principles forward through the standards I have fought to restore. Every garden gate, security fence, automated entrance and high-security perimeter gives us another opportunity to demonstrate what the Fenceways name means.
We have come from Manchester. We have endured setbacks. I have rebuilt the company through discipline, determination and hard work. We now serve customers across Britain, including some of the country’s most prestigious addresses and most security-sensitive environments.
But we remain grounded in the same belief that began in 1983:
Build it properly. Treat people fairly. Protect the reputation.
The next chapter is being driven with the same determination
Fenceways has been brought back from the brink, but the resurrection is not the end of the story.
It is the beginning of the next chapter.
I am continuing to develop our luxury fencing range, expand our security and infrastructure capabilities, and support homeowners and businesses nationwide with the same hard work that rebuilt the company.
If you are planning a new fence, gate, security upgrade or complete perimeter solution, I invite you to speak with us. We will listen to what you need, assess your site properly and recommend a solution built around the right balance of security, appearance, durability and value.
Fenceways was established in Manchester in 1983. It was sold, weakened and nearly lost. Then I brought it back.
Not through nostalgia.
Through hard work.
Not by sharing responsibility.
By taking it personally.
Not by copying the past.
By restoring the company’s original spirit and carrying it confidently into the future.
Fenceways Group Ltd: established in 1983, rebuilt through Paul Strong’s discipline, hard work and determination.
