When it comes to choosing a company to protect your home, business or critical infrastructure, history matters. A company’s age alone is not enough, but a genuine heritage built on hard work, resilience and consistent standards tells you something important: the business has learned, adapted and continued to earn its place.
At Fenceways Group Ltd, we are proud of our Manchester roots and our journey since 1983. We have grown from a company established in Manchester into a nationwide fencing and gate specialist serving customers from our Manchester and London bases, including some of the UK’s most distinguished postcodes.
I believe heritage should never be treated as a decorative story placed on an “About Us” page. It should be visible in the way a company works, the materials it selects, the promises it makes and the responsibility it accepts after the installation is complete.
Heritage Is More Than a Date on a Sign
A date such as 1983 is meaningful because it represents more than longevity. It represents decades of changing customer expectations, new materials, tougher security requirements and evolving installation techniques.
For you as a customer, heritage can provide confidence in several ways:
It suggests experience gained through real projects, not simply marketing claims.
It indicates that a company has had time to refine its methods.
It gives you a clearer sense of the values behind the business.
It provides evidence of resilience when the market becomes challenging.
It helps establish accountability because reputation has been earned over many years.
I have seen firsthand that customers want more than a fence or gate. You want to know that the company advising you understands your property, your priorities and the consequences of getting the work wrong.
A garden fence must provide privacy, durability and visual appeal. A commercial perimeter must support safety and operational security. A gate serving a luxury property must combine reliable access control with an appropriate finish. Heritage gives a company the perspective to understand those differences.
Manchester Roots Have Shaped the Fenceways Standard
Fenceways began in Manchester in 1983, and those roots remain central to who we are. Manchester is a city associated with industry, engineering, enterprise and determination. Those qualities have influenced the way we approach fencing and perimeter solutions.
We are proud to carry that practical, hardworking character into every project:
We assess the site carefully before recommending a solution.
We consider how materials will perform in real British weather.
We focus on accurate measurements and sound installation.
We look beyond appearance to consider long-term performance.
We treat every project as an opportunity to protect our reputation.
Our work now extends from Manchester across the UK, with a London presence serving homeowners, estates, businesses and organisations in areas including Chelsea, Kensington, Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge.

That expansion does not mean leaving our heritage behind. It means taking the standards developed through our history into new environments and applying them to new challenges.
Paul Strong and the Hard Work of Rebuilding
Heritage is tested most seriously when a company faces difficulty. It is easy to celebrate a successful history when everything is progressing smoothly. The real test comes when the business must be restored, strengthened and given a new sense of direction.
That is where Paul Strong’s leadership has been central to the Fenceways story.
Paul did not simply inherit a name and expect its history to carry the company forward. He committed himself to rebuilding Fenceways through personal effort, discipline and determination. His leadership has involved restoring confidence in the brand, re-establishing high standards and developing a business capable of serving both domestic customers and mission-critical commercial clients.
Before taking on that challenge, Paul developed experience through 18 years of military service, including work in demanding operational and intelligence environments. That background shaped the structured way he approaches risk, planning, logistics and execution.
I see the rebuilding of Fenceways as a clear reminder that heritage is not passive. It must be protected and renewed by people willing to work for it.
Paul’s leadership has helped turn the company’s past into a platform for the future by focusing on:
The Rolls-Royce Parallel: Heritage Can Be Rebuilt
The importance of rebuilding is not unique to Fenceways. Rolls-Royce provides a powerful example of how a respected institution can face a serious fall and still rebuild its future.
The Rolls-Royce engineering business encountered a major financial crisis in 1971 during the development of the RB211 engine. The company entered liquidation, and its strategically important engineering operations were restructured under government ownership before later returning to the private sector.
You can read more about the company’s history in the official Rolls-Royce history.
The lesson is not that Fenceways and Rolls-Royce are identical. They are not. The lesson is that heritage does not mean a company is immune to difficulty. Instead, heritage can provide the values, reputation and purpose needed to rebuild with credibility.
A company’s history becomes especially valuable when its leaders are prepared to do the hard work of restoring trust. Paul Strong’s leadership reflects that principle. He has worked to bring Fenceways back with a clear purpose: honour the company’s established standards while building a stronger, more disciplined and forward-looking business.
Craftsmanship Is How Heritage Becomes Visible
Heritage only matters if customers can see it in the finished work.
For Fenceways, craftsmanship is expressed through the details that determine whether a fence or gate continues to perform after the initial installation:
Straight, consistent lines.
Securely fixed posts and panels.
Appropriate foundations and ground preparation.
Carefully selected timber and metalwork.
Clean finishing around gates, corners and changes in level.
Practical designs that suit the property and its surroundings.
Installation methods chosen for durability rather than speed alone.

We use FSC-certified timber where appropriate, helping you choose materials sourced through responsible forestry standards. That matters because a quality installation should not only look good today; it should represent a considered, responsible investment.
I always advise customers to ask questions about materials, preparation, installation and aftercare before work begins. A reputable company should be able to explain not only what it is recommending, but why that recommendation is right for your property.
Quality Means Standing Behind the Work
A heritage built on reputation creates an obligation. If customers trust you with their home, business or security perimeter, you must be prepared to stand behind the result.
That is why Fenceways provides a 10-year warranty on qualifying work and products. A warranty is not a substitute for good workmanship, but it demonstrates confidence in the materials, installation process and support offered to customers.
Our services cover a wide range of requirements, including:
Bespoke residential fencing and garden gates.
Premium timber fencing and decorative panels.
Automated driveway and entrance gates.
High-security commercial and industrial fencing.
School and playground fencing.
Warehouse, airport, power station and data centre perimeter solutions.
Rising bollards and controlled-access systems.
Maintenance, emergency repairs and security upgrades.

Why Customers Benefit from a Heritage Company
When you choose a company with a meaningful history, you are not simply buying from an older business. You are choosing the benefit of accumulated knowledge.
Here are some compelling reasons heritage can matter to you:
Better judgement: Experience helps identify practical risks before they become expensive problems.
More appropriate recommendations: A knowledgeable contractor can distinguish between a decorative boundary, a privacy solution and a security perimeter.
Greater consistency: Established standards help ensure that quality does not depend entirely on individual interpretation.
Stronger accountability: A company with a reputation to protect has a reason to take communication and aftercare seriously.
Confidence in complex projects: Commercial and infrastructure clients need evidence that a contractor understands planning, coordination and security requirements.
A more personal service: Local roots can remain important even when a company operates nationwide.
There can be disadvantages to relying on heritage if a company becomes complacent or refuses to modernise. That is why we believe pride in history must be balanced with investment in current methods, technology and customer service.
The past should guide a company, not restrict it.
Be Proud of Where You Came From
Every strong company needs to know where it came from. Heritage gives employees a shared standard, gives leaders a sense of responsibility and gives customers a reason to believe that the business will still care about its reputation tomorrow.
At Fenceways, we are proud of our Manchester beginning in 1983. We are proud of the resilience that has carried the company forward. We are proud of Paul Strong’s hard work in rebuilding the business and establishing a renewed direction. We are proud to serve customers from Manchester and London across the UK.
Most importantly, we understand that heritage is something we must continue to earn.
If you are planning a new garden fence, automated gate, commercial perimeter or high-security installation, I will guide you through the process from initial consultation to completion. We will consider your property, your objectives and the standard you expect from the finished work.
Remember: history is not just about looking back. At its best, heritage underpins the standards, trust and confidence you rely on today: and gives us the responsibility to build even better for tomorrow.
